Understanding 1099 Taxes

If you receive a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC for freelance, contract, or gig work, you're responsible for paying both income tax and self-employment (SE) tax. Unlike W-2 employees, no taxes are withheld from your payments, so you need to estimate and pay quarterly.

Self-Employment Tax

SE tax covers Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%) — a combined 15.3% on 92.35% of your net self-employment earnings. The Social Security portion is capped at $176,100 for 2025. You can deduct half of your SE tax when calculating adjusted gross income.

Quarterly Estimated Payments

The IRS expects you to pay taxes four times a year (April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year). Missing a deadline can trigger an underpayment penalty. Use this calculator to determine each quarter's payment amount.

Reducing Your Tax Bill

Deductible business expenses — home office, equipment, software, mileage, and health insurance premiums — reduce your net self-employment income before any tax is calculated. Keeping thorough records throughout the year is the single best way to lower your effective rate.
